The boat tours from Vlore runs from April through to October. Within that window, conditions vary considerably — not just in terms of weather and sea state, but in how busy the tours are, whether certain destinations are accessible, and how the coastline actually looks and feels on the water. The right month depends on what you are optimising for.

This guide covers each month honestly, based on conditions along the Karaburun Peninsula where all four of our tours operate.

April

April is the start of the season and one of the quietest months of the year on the Albanian coast. Air temperatures in Vlore reach the low-to-mid 20s°C on most days, with some cooler and windier spells. Sea temperatures are around 17–18°C — cool enough to limit how long most visitors stay in the water, but comfortable for a short swim at a cave stop or a beach.

The advantage of April is the light and the solitude. The coastline along Karaburun in April is a different shade of green than it is in summer — the hills above the bays are fully vegetated and the water clarity is excellent before the summer boat traffic disturbs sediment. You will often have Grama Bay entirely to yourself.

One important restriction: Sazan Island is not accessible for landing in April. The island opens to visitors from June to November only. The Sazan Island tour still runs — the boat approaches the island pier — but passengers remain on board. If landing on Sazan is important to you, wait until June.

Booking in advance is not necessary in April. Same-day and next-day availability is almost always possible.

May

May is a step up from April in every respect. Temperatures climb to the mid-to-upper 20s°C, sea temperatures reach around 20°C, and the weather is more settled. The number of visitors is still well below summer levels but May is noticeably busier than April, particularly in the second half of the month when Italian and German visitors begin arriving in larger numbers.

May is a strong choice for visitors who want warmth without the July and August crowds. The full-day Grama Bay tour runs without constraint in May and the snorkeling stops are comfortable at 20°C. The Sazan Island restriction still applies through May — landing is not permitted until June.

Booking one or two days in advance is sufficient for most tours in May. The full-day tour can fill up on weekends, so booking ahead by a day is sensible if your schedule is fixed.

June — Peak Recommendation

June is consistently the best month for boat tours from Vlore. The conditions align across every variable that matters: air temperatures in the high 20s to low 30s°C, sea temperatures reaching 23–24°C, calm morning seas, and visitor numbers that are elevated but not overwhelming. The crowds of July and August have not yet arrived and accommodation in Vlore is significantly easier to find and cheaper.

Sazan Island opens in June. This is the first month that landing on the island is permitted, which means the Sazan Island tour operates in full from the start of the month. If you want the complete experience including the island interior — the abandoned barracks, the Soviet-era buildings, the military bunkers — June is the earliest you can do it.

The Sunset Wine Tour in June benefits from long evenings. Sunset at this latitude falls around 20:00–20:15, which means the tour departs around 19:15 and returns to the office in full evening light. The cave at golden hour in June is the best version of the sunset tour available across the season.

Book 2–3 days in advance in June for the full-day tour. Half-day tours still have good same-day availability in early June.

July and August — Peak Season

July and August are the busiest months on the Albanian Riviera. Vlore fills with domestic Albanian tourists, Italians, Germans and visitors from across the Balkans. The tours run daily and the weather is almost entirely reliable — clear skies and calm seas in the mornings are the norm. Afternoon winds pick up regularly, which is why all tours depart in the morning.

Water temperatures reach 26–28°C in August — the warmest of the year and ideal for extended swimming at Grama Bay or the Karaburun beach stops. If swimming is the primary draw, July and August deliver the best in-water conditions.

The trade-offs are real. The full-day Grama Bay tour frequently sells out, sometimes days in advance. Grama Bay itself, which is empty in April and June, has other boats present in peak season. The town is crowded and accommodation prices are at their highest. The heat on the boat during transit is more intense in August than at any other point in the season.

If you are visiting in July or August, book the full-day tour as early as possible — ideally 3–5 days ahead. Half-day tours are easier to secure but still benefit from advance booking.

September — Peak Recommendation

September is the other standout month, alongside June. The summer crowds leave quickly after the first week of September and the sea remains warm — water temperatures hold at 24–26°C through the month, making it the warmest swimming of the season relative to the air temperature and crowd levels. Days are still long, sunny and hot in the first three weeks of the month.

Sazan Island is still open in September, which means all four tours operate without restriction. The full-day tour in September is often the best version of the experience: warm water, fewer boats, long afternoon light at Grama Bay, and availability that is significantly easier to manage than in July or August.

Booking 1–2 days ahead is generally sufficient in September. The full-day tour can still fill on weekends in early September but availability recovers quickly by mid-month.

October

October is the final month of the season and a genuinely underrated option for the right kind of visitor. Temperatures drop to the low-to-mid 20s°C, sea temperatures remain around 21–23°C in the first half of the month, and the coastline is almost entirely clear of other visitors. The quality of the light in early October — lower sun angle, longer golden hours — is excellent for photography.

Weather is less predictable in October than in the summer months and there is a higher chance of wind or rain affecting conditions on any given day. Tours may need to be rescheduled more often in October than in any other month of the season. This is worth factoring in if your schedule has no flexibility.

Sazan Island remains accessible through October. The season typically closes after October, though exact dates depend on conditions each year.

Summary: Which Month Is Right for You?

The answer depends on what you prioritise most:

Best overall conditions, fewest crowds: June or September. These are the two months where everything works well simultaneously — warm water, calm seas, manageable visitor numbers and full access to all tours including Sazan Island.

Warmest water and guaranteed daily sun: July or August. The in-water conditions are the best of the season but advance booking is essential and the overall experience is busier.

Quietest, best light, lowest prices: April or May. Ideal for visitors who prioritise solitude and photography over warm swimming. Note the Sazan Island restriction through May.

Warm water, empty coastline, long golden hour: Early October. Best for visitors with schedule flexibility who want the late-season version of the experience.

Practical Notes

Tour availability: All four tours — the full-day Grama Bay tour, the Sazan Island half-day tour, the Haxhi Ali Cave half-day tour, and the Sunset Wine Tour — run throughout the season from April to October, subject to sea conditions. The Sazan Island tour runs in full from June to November only.

Booking lead time by month: April–May: same day usually fine. June: 1–2 days. July–August: 3–5 days for full-day tour. September: 1–2 days. October: same day usually fine.

Weather cancellations: If conditions are unsafe on the day, the skipper will contact you to reschedule at no charge. This happens rarely in the main season but is more common at the shoulder months of April, May and October.
